It’s fuzzy, but I still remember the moment…
We were in Colorado on one of our annual summer family vacations. I was around 10 years old. I remember picking up my mom’s Kodak Instamatic 104, raising it to eye level, and peering through the crude viewfinder. The instant I clicked the shutter I said to myself, “I can really do this!” It was if my calling had found me in the span of a shutter release. It fit.
Advance the film forward 16 years and I had totally quit photography because I was so frustrated with film. I never truly understood my camera.
After about a 3 year hiatus, my calling was tapping me on the shoulder asking me if I still remembered him. By then digital was in full bloom and I finally saved enough to get a shiny new Canon DSLR. It was simply magic. Within one week I finally understood the harmony between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. I finally knew my camera. It fit.
Photography allows me to be who I really am; curious, creative, and always searching to find the hidden.
I will not give it up again.
